Trader Joe's New Chicken-less BBQ Pulled Chicken: Review

by Kathy Patalsky · updated: Sep 13, 2019 · published: Feb 3, 2009 · About 2 minutes to read this article. 12 Comments

Trader Joe's Chicken-less line of products, in the refrigerated section, is one of my faves! Incredibly versatile, healthy and delicious. So when I saw a new Chicken-less product, I was thrilled. It's new Chicken-less Pulled Chicken in barbecue sauce. Later today I'll post a devastatingly delicious, takes 5 minutes, vegan BBQ chicken sandwich recipe. Read my product review ahead....

Trader Joe's Chicken-less Pulled Chicken in barbecue sauce

Shelf-Appeal:
Refrigerated in a air-tight plastic bag. You can find the box by the hummus, tortillas and vegan lunch meat. The box photo doesn't do this product justice.

Label Check: Nice. Per 120 calorie, 128 gram serving, two servings per package: Only 2 grams of fat-shocking for the taste. (Zero grams saturated fat). 17 grams of vegan protein. Both soy and pea protein are present. 9 grams carbs. 45% RDA of iron. There is quite a bit of sodium: 480 mg, which is about 20% RDA. So if you are watching your sodium, you want to be aware of the amount in this and all shelf-ready products. Overall, a delicious source or low-fat vegan protein and iron.

Taste test:
Moist. Tender as can be. Perfectly sweet with a mild smoky-spicy flavor kick. Next to a restaurant-quality seitan dish, this is the most tender vegan protein product I have ever tasted. Perfect for a quick sandwich-the flavors are so complex all you need is bread!

Price: Around $3.49. Great value.

Last Word: This product has made it on my must-have TJ's products list. Right up there with my other TJ brand faves: Vegan Pad Thai, Savory Crisps, Soy Nuggets, Soy Pitas and Sun Dried Tomato Hummus.

I absolutely agree! I make EVERYTHING from scratch and I still can't get away from this product. I go through at least 3 boxes a week with my family. I tend to grill a Brioche bun (from TJ's) and add mushroom, onion, avocado and pickle to it and that's it!

Great thorough review, and I'm also delighted that you provided the nutritional analysis!

Would that more vegan bloggers were as diligent. It's so important that we double-check what's in the vegan products we purchase.

    Best to ya, Mark

    Jen,
It's really good. The best part is how easy it is to prepare. 2 minutes in the micro and its ready. The texture compared to chicken is definitely softer. It is really moist. But that's why it makes a great sandwich ingredient on crusty french bread....(see my vegan bbq sandwich)

I may stop and get this today! I wonder how the texture is compared to "real" chicken....
