Poor Man's Fire Chai: Cheaper than Starbucks.

by Kathy Patalsky · updated: Sep 13, 2019 · published: Jan 21, 2009 · About 1 minute to read this article. 4 Comments

Don't get me wrong, I love my Starbuck Soy Chai. But, on a thirsty, chilly day, you can end up spending ten bucks a day on special coffeehouse, frothed up, cutesy named chai lattes.

Poor Man's Fire Chai. It's hot! And, you can drink it in your PJ's and slippers since you don't need to leave the house. Yes! Here is an awesome recipe for my unique chai that will knock your slippers off!

...and save you some money. Get more heat for your buck with my simple recipe for Poor Man's Fire Chai.

I call it my "Poor Man's" Fire Chai because all you need is:

a mug, soymilk, sweetener, spices, water and a basic tea bag.

The secret ingredient is the cayenne. It adds a spicy kick that blows any Starbucks chai blend out of the water.

Complete recipe follows...

Poor Man’s Fire Chai
Ingredients:
black or chai tea bag
water
soy milk
sweetener (I like agave syrup)*
cayenne powder
cinnamon powder

To Make:
Fill mug: ⅔ milk, ⅓ water.
Heat liquid until hot.
Add tea,
2 sprinkles cayenne,
2 sprinkles cinnamon.
Add 2 spoonfuls agave.
Stir well. Enjoy.

Tip: More cayenne, more fire!

*Non-vegans may use honey.

This sounds easy and super-quick! I love making chai, and it's not hard at all:

boil equal parts water and vanilla soymilk, then lower to simmer and add smashed cardamon, cinnamon, black pepper, and fresh ginger. Simmer on very low for 10 mins, add black tea and steep for 5-10 mins more. Strain through a very fine strainer and sweeten with agave.

I always make double, and put the leftovers into the fridge... it's great iced, too!
